In 1841 when the Delta Chapter at NYU invited all Psi U’s to their campus for a meeting we became the first fraternity to ever hold a convention. We’re excited to continue that tradition today at the 178th such gathering in Washington DC! Whether you’re an involved alumni, a new member who just joined, or an alumnus who hasn’t revisited Psi U for some time there is something for everyone at a Psi U Convention. You can register for the entire Convention or just sign up for single events, like the Friday night networking event at Old Ebbitt Grill, Saturday’s Excursion to the DC United match, or Sunday’s Awards Banquet.

1st Annual FishFund Venture Summit Held

The FishFund was first established in March of 2021 and was named from the spirit of the proverb: “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” This fund primarily supports educational programs to inspire, mentor, and train entrepreneurship and venture endeavors within Psi Upsilon and was initiated by Joseph Cillo, Delta ’61 (NYU). The first annual FishFund Venture Summit was held in San Francisco from May 12-13. Over 30 brothers gathered in San Francisco and Brother Cillo presented a truly inspirational keynote address about “Traveling to the Island of Yes”.
Four companies made presentations, including:
• Immersitech (Presentation by Jim Poore, business partner of Garrett Gleim, Tau ’01 (Pennsylvania))
• Echo Investing (Presentation by Omar Gutierrez, MD & Jay Riemenschneider, Beta Alpha ’91 (Miami Ohio))
• AutMow Robotic Mowing (Presentation by Jeff Lattimer, Eta ’04 (Lehigh))
• RealityBLU (Presentation by Stefan Agustsson (Joe Cillo, Delta ‘61 (NYU), is a key investor))

2022 Scholarship Announcement Keynote

The Psi Upsilon Foundation was pleased to award scholarships to 27 undergraduate and 5 graduate students for the 2022-23 school year. The scholarship recipients were celebrated at a virtual event on Thursday May 19th. Scholarship committee chair Richard A. Rasmussen, Upsilon ’72 (Rochester) read the names of recipients, and the keynote was delivered by James Volpentest, Theta Theta ’90 (Washington).

Early in March 2022, at the UN Environment Assembly, diplomats from 175 nations voted unanimously to create a legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution. The Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) called it “the most significant environmental multilateral deal since the Paris accord.”
Dr. Barbara Hendrie, Kappa ‘80 (Bowdoin), is the 2022 Psi Upsilon Social Impact Fellowship Honorary Fellow, and she was in the room. Barb is the director of UNEP’s North America Office, and on the evening of March 24th she spoke to UW–Madison students and faculty about the consequences of plastic pollution, as well as the importance of the resolution earlier this month. Read more here.
The Psi Upsilon Foundation awards a reimbursement grant to deserving chapters (or groups of chapters) who want to produce educational programs or workshops both in-person and virtually. Recipients may use the funds to pay for hospitality, event space, facilitator/speaker fees, travel and lodging needs, production of materials, etc.

One of the truly great and special “Psi U” architectural achievements is the glass dome that sits in the center of the Pi Chapter House at Syracuse University. The Pi Chapter was originally the Upsilon Kappa Society at Genesee College (which became Syracuse University in 1870) and dates back to the early 1860s. The Upsilon Kappa had an octagon shaped badge which survives symbolically in the octagon shaped stained glass dome inside the Pi Chapter House. The beautiful dome was recently restored by the Pi Alumni Association and you can read more about it in the 2022 Issue of Reflections; A Journal of Psi Upsilon History.
Barry M. Gough, Zeta Zeta ’62 (UBC) receives Admirals’ Medal

Dr. Barry M. Gough, Zeta Zeta ’62 (University of British Columbia) Author, Maritime history expert, and historian, recently earned the Admirals’ Medal for his contribution to maritime studies. Dr. Gough is the 35th recipient of the silver medal awarded annually for outstanding achievement in maritime-related science, technology and academic studies or application of practical maritime skills.
Dr. Gough was given the award during the May 26 Vancouver Island Branch of the Naval Association of Canada luncheon at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. Established in 1985, the medal is named for Rear-Admirals George Stephens and Victor Brodeur and Vice-Admiral Rollo Mainguy.
