28th Archons’ Academy comes to a close!

The Archons’ Academy is an annual event started in the 1990s that allows our chapter presidents to network with one another and share best practices while learning valuable skills to assist them during their time as president. This year we returned to an in person event and 20 of our 26 chapters were represented. Topics included Psi Upsilon’s history and values, conflict resolution, communication and delegation, risk management and more. Read The Full Recap Here.

Brotherly Fellowship Gatherings

With great anticipation and patience, we are excited to return to in-person events with a series of home gatherings in March and April of 2022. With generous brothers opening their homes to enjoy fellowship and catch up with our beloved fraternity, we aim to make these events complimentary to brothers living or staying in the area. Feel free to attend any of the gatherings you wish, registration is required.

A full listing of these events can be found here and will be posted on psiu.org.

Consider becoming a sponsor of an event at $300 donation to the Foundation. Contact Bethann Taylor at Bethann@psiu.org or 317-571-1833 x102 if you have any questions or interest in helping.

Alumni Profile: William Cavanaugh, Pi ’72 (Syracuse)

When you meet Bill Cavanagh, Pi ’72 (Syracuse), expect a warm smile and good humor. At first this mild mannered and bespectacled brother comes across as another cheery suburban Dad ready with a good joke and a relaxed smile. One might not guess that behind this prosaic grin stands someone who experienced an eventful youth of the 60’s and 70’s and is now one of the most respected tax attorneys not only in New York but in the world. Psi U has remained a constant part of Cavanagh’s life. “My best friends are people who were [active] brothers at the same time I was. We have been friends through the good and the bad.” For the fiftieth anniversary of his own initiation, Cavanagh addressed the Pi Chapter’s 2019 Initiation Banquet. “I was duly impressed. It reinforced my commitment to the Pi and to Psi Upsilon,” said Cavanagh.

“Psi Upsilon was there for me in college and I’ll be forever grateful. The best way to thank our predecessors is keep their legacy going.” He added that “Many talented alumni devote a lot of time to Psi Upsilon and the local chapters. I try to do my part through contributions.” Cavanagh said that “when I was a recent graduate, I saw that a long-ago Pi alumnus, who was a very prominent New York City lawyer, made a substantial contribution each year. The fact that he still cared after so many years was an inspiration for me. I can only hope that there are others who see what I do and are inspired to give as well.”

From the Archives: Founder Edward Martindale’s 1898 address on the founding of Psi Upsilon

In 1898, Edward Martindale, Theta 1836, a founder of Psi Upsilon, attended the 65th Psi Upsilon Convention in Minneapolis, MN on May 5th. He gave a remarkable keynote speech, which both reflected on the founding of the fraternity, and how much it had grown beyond the expectations of its founders. You can read a copy of this meaningful piece of Psi U history here.

March Challenge

Our annual March Challenge starts Thursday, March 24th and runs until Monday, March 28th . During this tradition chapters compete against one another for bragging rights and the chapter with the most donors to the Annual Fund will be crowned the champion! In addition, generous donors have stepped up to match gifts, so your donations will have double the impact during the challenge!

In 2021 we were able to raise just over $43,000 for the Annual Fund with 190 brothers participating. The Omicron Chapter at Illinois was victorious with 32 donors. This investment by so many allowed us to hire a Director of Growth to better support chapters that needed recruitment support after a turbulent 2 years of virtual and hybrid recruitment activities.

This year we hope to raise over $50,000 and have every active chapter participate.

If you would like to make a matching gift please contact Director of Administration Bethann Taylor at Bethann@psiu.org or 317-571-1833 x 102

More information about the March Challenge can be found here.
