Echo Investing
Presentation by Jay Riemenschneider, Beta Alpha’91 ( Miami University of Ohio) & Omar Gutierrez, MD (Fiji)

Echo Investing is a FinTech platform that offers a complete ecosystem for all people, the experienced and the inexperienced alike, to learn about investing, share portfolios and investment philosophies, and interact via our internal social media.  What makes Echo unique is our ability to connect expert investors and influencers with the novice.  Here, the new investor connects with individuals they can benchmark and trust while benefitting from their investment expertise by copying their portfolios.  (We call this “echoing.”)  Expert investors who have demonstrable track records monetize their investing skills in a way that easily and securely helps the broader community while benefitting themselves financially and professionally.  “Robinhood meets Patreon” captures our long-term vision. Sign up @ https://www.echo.investments today! Follow us #echoinvesting

Jay Riemenschneider has a strong background in fund-development honed during a decade-plus of work in Major Gifts and capital campaign consulting throughout the United States, but with heavy concentration in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and South, and across a wide range of vertical markets. He has a particular interest in working with churches to achieve their fund-raising goals, and more recently has gained experience in fund-raising for economic development organizations. Altogether, he has worked on campaigns whose goals approach $500M. It has been a pleasure to transition towards connecting worthwhile entrepreneurship ventures (with high impact potential) and potential angel investors. He is a graduate of Western Reserve Academy and Miami University. At Miami, he was the president of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity.

5.20-22.2022 – History & Archives Weekend

The Psi Upsilon History & Archives committee was created last year and charged with researching the materials in our archives, sharing stories with our brotherhood, and preserving and making the archives accessible for research.

Brothers from the committee and others who are interested in the history of Psi Upsilon can travel to Indianapolis in May to work on organizing and cataloging the archives. For those unfamiliar with the archives, they currently occupy several storage units and contain material dating back to the founding of Psi Upsilon. Organizing them is a daunting task, to say the least.

Clifford Edmisten, Gamma Tau ’00 (Georgia Tech) created a photo gallery from the last weekend that you can view here. As you look through the pictures, you can see both how much was accomplished and how much interesting work there is to do!

Committee Chair and de factor curator Evan W. Terry, Epsilon Phi ’93 (McGill University) said it best: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” During this work weekend we will continue better organizing the archives, formalized how we intake and catalog materials, made improvements to storage, and assessed needs going forward.

Again, we are so thankful for all the time the committee spent on this important work.

If you are interested in financially supporting the work of the History & Archives committee contact the Foundation Chairman Alexander Senchak, Eta ’06 (Lehigh) or you may make a gift here.

For information about attending the next History & Archives open house contact Director of Member Engagement Jonathan Chaffin, Gamma Tau ’00 (Georgia Tech).

Pi chapter raised $78,554 for Movember 2021

During the Fall of 2021, The Pi chapter raised $78,554 for men’s health Issues through the Movember Foundation, making them one of the most successful teams in the world. The Movember Foundation supports various men’s health causes, ranging from mental health and suicide prevention to prostate cancer awareness.

Michael Dellon, Pi ’17, started a Movember team in the Pi chapter as an undergrad and has helped the effort grow in the years since, with the amount raised increasing from $7,000 the first year to $29,000 in 2019.

It was that sustained effort to grow the program and make such a charitable impact in support of the Movember Foundation in the fall of 2020 that the chapter received the Award of Distinction at the 177th Convention for the $48,000 the Pi chapter raised during the fall of 2020.

Michael started the chapter’s involvement with the Movember Foundation his Sophomore year (2014). He writes, “we had a small Movember team of around 5-7 active brothers.  By 2015, we had grown the team substantially.  From 2014-2016, the team was totally comprised of active brothers.  That being said, once I graduated in 2017, I decided to make a team that was not just limited to active members.  At that point, I started to call on Pi alumni and friends outside the house to join the team. This is really when we started seeing the impressive fundraising numbers.  Today, our team is comprised of active brothers, alumni, and some of our friends. We now have about 70 people on the team, with well over half being Pi affiliated.”

Michael’s passion for Movember came from his own struggle with testicular cancer.  He writes, “My battle with cancer put me out of commission for a full year between 2012 and 2013 and was actually the reason I transferred to Syracuse, as being in NY allowed me to be closer to my doctors and family.  Unfortunately, in 2016 I lost my cousin to mental health issues, and in 2018, the Pi lost a brother to suicide.  We were all devastated by this. After losses like these, we decided to dive deep into preventing male suicide and made that a pillar of our fundraising.”

These somber events have led to the chapter making great contributions
to issues of men’s health awareness in a short time. We asked Michael how, and his answers suggest how other chapters can start or amplify their involvement with philanthropic organizations.

“When we first started, we had around 7 team members raising a few thousand dollars.  By the time I left Syracuse, we had around 25 active members and I believe we raised $7k or so.  Once we opened up the team to alumni and friends, we started to see our numbers shoot up.  in 2018, we raised about $16K, 2019 was just short of $24k, and this year, the $48k you saw.”

“This year was a total team effort, but we were able to hit such high numbers due to a lot of story sharing.  It is difficult to talk about a lot of reasons why Movember is important to us, but this year, the team really went all out in sharing stories of why this cause is so important.  Also, as we become more and more knowledgeable about fundraising, we are finding new and unique ways to raise money and awareness.

International Office Moves

The new mailing address for correspondence to the Fraternity and Foundation:

1389 W. 86th Street #345
Indianapolis, IN 46260

Beginning in early 2019, the Board of Directors began developing a strategic plan for the property that the Foundation owned in Indianapolis. The almost ½ acre property and building, purchased in 1994, was the International Headquarters. The building served our staff and archives well, and has proved to be a sound investment for the Foundation. It demanded, however, quite a lot of maintenance and investment to keep it consistent with other similar commercial properties. Due to the pandemic, the Board tabled the comprehensive plan until this past spring when several members of the board and staff convened in Indianapolis to review with contractors the various possibilities in the best interest of our organization.

In a moment of serendipity, as the plan was being finalized, we received an unsolicited, reasonable offer from our neighbor to the east of our property to purchase the land and building. This necessitated a Board conversation to discuss the options for the Foundation and Fraternity as well as weigh the projected market conditions. After careful review with real estate experts and our counsel, the board ultimately voted unanimously to move forward with the sale of the building and property. The sale has been a valuable addition to our now robust investment portfolio.

We have secured appropriate spaces for our staff offices as well as our archives and treasures in Indianapolis. The move has already begun, and we will be fully moved into our new space by the end of the year. Since the sale of the building in July of this year, the History and Archives Committee (formed in 2020 out of our digital archives project) has been working diligently to organize the troves of archival materials and collection of memorabilia throughout the building.

While we transition out of the building, we are also grateful that we have found an appropriate space to house all the recognition features of Heritage Square including the bricks and flags. We will keep them safely stored for the short term while we strategically plan and determine how best to utilize them in a new way that serves the fraternity’s long-term vision.

In the meantime, we will be launching a recognition page on the website to honor the lasting investment of donors to that campaign. Next March, we will also honor donors in the 2nd edition of Reflections: Psi Upsilon History Journal. (You can see the first edition here)
